Tuxedo Tennis Club
Kicks Off 2007 Season
The 2007 season was officially kicked
off at our recent Open House. With Team Tennis already
in progress and the tennis ladders starting to fill up,
the club is alive with tennis enthusiasts happy to be on
the outdoor courts once again. Be sure to grab your
racquet and join one of the many programs or just drop
in and enjoy a leisurely game with friends.
Stephanie Scherbain is our new club
manager. She was a member last year and is currently
enrolled in a communications program at Red River
College. She and her staff have been doing a great job
making everyone feel welcome.
Roland Burrell returns as our club
tennis professional. He is teaching on court 6 and is
more than willing to help you out with the development
of your game. Roland's programs continue to attract new
members to our club and helps provide a professional
image to the rest of the tennis community. Whether you
are new to tennis, or tuning up for championship play,
he can help you get to the next level. For more lesson
details

Thank you to all those who have helped
with getting the club ready for the 2007
season. It is the generous volunteer support at our club that
truly makes Tuxedo Tennis Club such an inviting
environment to play tennis.

Club Board News
The Tuxedo Tennis Club board would like
to thank Brian Wilding for all his hard work during his
tenure as club president. Brian will be stepping down
from his board position due to his busy work
commitments. Tom Neufeld will step up and become interim
President and Selvi Varathappan has kindly agreed to
fill the big shoes of the vice-president.
The club is working on re-installing
the lights (permits are slow to be granted) and have
plans to do some surface work on courts 1 and 2 in June.
Some new windscreens will arrive soon along with a new
net or two. We continue to explore options for improving
our clubhouse and will keep members informed as progress
is made.
Fundraising Update
Tuxedo Tennis Club is wholly supported
by members dues and receives no operational funding from
the city. There is lots to improve, from the lights,
court surfacing, fencing, clubhouse, nets and
windscreens... you get the picture. This summer we will
be selling the Entertainment Books in the clubhouse with
$10 from every purchase going towards club improvements.
We will also be looking into hosting a fundraising
social in the fall to help grow our improvement funds.
Let us know if you have any ideas or wish to get
involved.
2007 Tuxedo Junior Open
Our club will once
again host the Tuxedo Junior Open which is being held
May 22nd to 27th. This is 1 of 3 tournaments being used
as a qualifier for the 2007 Outdoor Prairie Regionals
and 1 of 7 tournaments being used as a qualifier for the
2008 Indoor Prairie Regionals. The entry deadline is
fast approaching. Those juniors born in 1989 or later
wishing to participate should drop off their completed entry forms
before 12 noon, Sunday May 20th. Entry forms can be
picked up at the clubhouse or online at
tennismanitoba.com.
Tournament matches
will be scheduled in the evenings during the week and
throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Members
looking for court time during the Tuxedo Junior Open may play at
Deer Lodge Tennis
Club. Please remember to
bring your membership card. We are still looking for
some additional tournament volunteers. If you are able
to help us out, please sign up at the clubhouse.

Congratulations to
Tuxedo junior member Evann Waschuk who won the Girls
Singles U14 and U16 events at the
World of Water Junior
Championships recently held at the Kildonan Tennis Club.
Evann's sister Kylie added to the family trophy count as
a finalist in the Girls Singles U12 event. Many of our
juniors preformed very well at the tournament.
We wish all
our juniors success in the up-coming
Tuxedo Junior Open
as they work towards qualification to the Canadian
Junior National Championships that take place later this
summer. |

Tennis Futures
More than 1,000
children in grades 4-6 will be taking part in the Tennis
Futures clinics being organized at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis
Club, Kildonan Tennis Club and Tuxedo
Tennis Club during May 14th - 18th. Bill Serbin, a physical
education teacher at John de Graff School and
coordinator of the Tennis Futures, has seen the program
grow over the past decade, to the point where three
clubs are now needed to host the 21 schools that will
participate. Our club will be hosting some of
these players on May 17th and 18th.

Manager's Message
Well here
we are with another great season of tennis ahead
of us. While the club has been underway for the
past few weeks, it has been a pleasure to be the
manager of the Tuxedo Tennis Club. A big thank
you goes to all the members who joined the club
in the annual Open House Barbeque on May 12th.
It was a great success. For those who were not
able to make it, I look forward to meeting you
and getting to know you and the tennis
community. My door is always open, so please
feel free to forward your concerns, or praises,
to me at any time. If I’m not working, you can
find me hitting a few balls on my off days.
Enjoy the season and I hope to see you on the
courts.
Stephanie Scherbain
